Backup leadership for county election boards
Beginning November 1, 2025, county election board assistant secretaries perform the secretary’s duties during illness, disqualification, or recusal. Other reasons for absence require written approval from the Secretary of the State Election Board. After a secretary’s death, removal, or resignation, the assistant serves until a successor is appointed as required by law. During an absence or vacancy, the assistant may vote at public board meetings only with written state approval. County secretaries must report whom they hire as assistants to the State Election Board, and assistants work under their direction.
