When an officer marks your ticket as in a highway work zone, a posted school zone, or a safety corridor, the presumptive fines are $875 for Class A, $525 for Class B, $325 for Class C, and $225 for Class D. Any state surcharge under ORS 1.188 is added. In county safety corridors, courts set minimum fines for certain crimes: at least 20% of the statutory maximum for listed misdemeanors, and at least 2% for listed felonies. The listed crimes are reckless driving, DUII, hit-and-run driver duties, criminal driving while suspended or revoked, and fleeing or trying to elude police. The corridor rules also cover Class A or B violations and Class C or D speed-related violations. Counties must post signs in safety corridors warning that fines are doubled. These penalties apply to offenses committed on or after the Act’s effective date.
County boards can name up to two county road segments as safety corridors at a time. They must first adopt clear, objective rules for picking them. The rules must require regular community meetings, extra enforcement, engineering fixes, infrastructure work, and public outreach. This only applies to county roads the county controls.
