Potentially higher business personal property taxes

Rhode Island municipalities can adopt higher rates on all taxable tangible personal property by local ordinance. This option applies in the year after a revaluation, statistical revaluation, or update. The rate cannot exceed twice the rate for any other property class. Municipalities must document that the difference prevents revaluation-related tax revenue from this property class from falling below the prior year. They need written approval from the state's Office of Municipal Affairs; actual tax bills depend on local action.
