Towns can raise business property tax rates

Cities and towns can adopt higher tax rates for taxable tangible personal property, such as business equipment, by ordinance. This option applies in the year after a revaluation, statistical revaluation, or update. The rate cannot exceed twice the rate for another property class. The municipality must document that the difference is needed to prevent that class’s estimated total tax levy from falling. That drop must result from the revaluation or update, and the Office of Municipal Affairs must give written approval.
