Charlestown can offer homeowners property tax relief

Beginning December 31, 2025, Charlestown’s town council can set an annual property tax exemption of up to 10% of assessed value. The council can also choose no exemption. Eligible properties include residential-only buildings with fewer than five housing units, and properties combining residential and commercial uses. The council must set eligibility rules by resolution or ordinance. For mixed-use properties, the exemption rate equals the council’s rate multiplied by the share of parcel square footage used residentially. With council approval, the exemption can be prorated when ownership transfers during the year from an ineligible to an eligible owner.
