Domestic violence prosecutors must complete special training

Beginning July 1, 2025, appointed lawyers must self-certify specialized training to prosecute domestic-violence protective-order violations or willful no-contact order violations. Training must follow national best practices and qualify for Rhode Island Bar Association continuing education credits. Lawyers must update their training every four years. At initial court appearances, a law-enforcement member must present the case, a training-certified appointed lawyer must prosecute it, or both.
