Disabled veterans get fee waiver and plates

The law exempts eligible disabled veterans from paying the annual vehicle registration fee and the driver’s license fee. You must be honorably discharged from the U.S. armed forces or Merchant Marine and have served in a U.S. war or campaign. You qualify with wartime loss or loss of use of a limb, a car granted under Public Law 663 (1946), a VA 100% service‑connected rating, or a VA finding of individual unemployability. The DMV issues one set of “Disabled Veteran” plates after VA certification or other acceptable proof. Plates are for a car or a commercial vehicle that weighs 12,000 pounds or less. If the veteran cannot drive, the plates may transfer to the spouse. After the veteran dies, the surviving spouse may keep them for life or until remarriage. The law takes effect upon passage.
