Multistate social work licenses require background checks

South Dakota’s social work board can issue multistate licenses under the social work licensure compact. Applicants must submit a full set of fingerprints as the board directs, sign an information release, and pay any fingerprinting and background-check fees. The board sends fingerprints to the state Division of Criminal Investigation for state and FBI background checks. The board must receive and consider the criminal history information before issuing a multistate license. The board cannot share that information with anyone who is not employed by the board.
