Free school meals for eligible kids

South Dakota districts cannot charge students who qualify for reduced-price meals for meals served through the National School Lunch Program or School Breakfast Program. Eligibility follows the federal program laws referenced as of January 1, 2026. Districts may charge students who do not qualify for free or reduced-price meals, employees, and other people not exempted by law. By June 30 each year, the Department of Education must calculate district reimbursements using information districts must send. Each reimbursement equals the free-meal reimbursement rate minus the reduced-price rate, multiplied by the number of meals served to reduced-price-eligible students. Payments use money appropriated in the state's general appropriation bill.
