More funding for victim support services

Beginning June 30, 2026, South Dakota provides $5.5 million from its general fund for nonprofit victim-service grants. The Department of Public Safety awards grants annually, with applications accepted July 1 through August 31. Eligible nonprofits must mainly help abused or neglected children, domestic violence victims, sexual assault victims, or victims of commercial sexual exploitation or trafficking. Grants fund round-the-clock emergency and transitional help, including food, lodging, and transportation. They also fund licensed counselors, round-the-clock crisis lines, case management, and services through child advocacy centers. Funds can also pay to train, certify, or employ sexual assault nurse examiners. Only these listed services qualify, and they must not be fully funded by other resources available through the department. Priority goes to organizations that have tried to raise the needed money. Grants cannot start a new program or organization or pay for legal services. Recipients must report annually on funded services and the number of different people served. The department can use funds for necessary grant administration, and money not lawfully spent or committed returns under state rules.
