Non-opioid coverage protections for Tennessee state employees
Beginning January 1, 2026, Tennessee state employee plans cannot give qualifying non-opioid pain drugs worse coverage than opioid or narcotic drugs on their preferred drug lists. Non-opioid drugs qualify after FDA approval for pain treatment or management has lasted at least nine months. The rule applies even without insurer review, including drugs provided through pharmacy benefits manager contracts. Plans can still prefer one opioid over another, or one non-opioid over another. The law does not set changes to premiums or out-of-pocket costs.
