Beginning July 1, 2025, in a truancy complaint or referral, a subpoena can require a school to give a student’s attendance records. The request can include all past years the student attended a public school. Schools must follow the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and other privacy laws before sharing. This improves officials’ access to attendance history but raises privacy risks for students and families.
