12-month birth control refills on request

Starting July 1, 2027, your health plan must let you get a 12-month supply of prescription birth control at one time. This applies only if the plan is renewed, amended, or delivered on or after that date and it covers prescription contraceptives. You must ask for the 12-month fill. Your prescriber can instruct the pharmacy to give a smaller amount.

More products count as contraceptives

State law now defines what counts as a contraceptive. It includes any device, medicine, biological product, or procedure that prevents pregnancy and is legally marketed under federal law. This guides what health plans and providers treat as contraception. The change takes effect July 1, 2027.

TennCare and CoverKids count as health plans

Starting July 1, 2027, TennCare and CoverKids policies count as health benefit plans for contraception rules. Their managed care plans count as health insurance entities and must follow the same rules. Limited-benefit products like dental, vision, Medicare supplement, workers’ comp, and auto medical pay are not included. The law also clarifies who is a healthcare provider under these rules and requires state licensure or certification.
