New pre-K enrollment deadlines for families
Starting with the 2025-2026 school year, Tennessee’s Department of Education must set two deadlines for voluntary pre-K enrollment each year. By the first deadline, local school agencies must check for open seats beyond those for at-risk children living in their area. That deadline must be no later than the start of school. If seats remain, a second enrollment deadline must fall no later than 30 days after school starts. Children enrolling at that stage must qualify under Tennessee Code § 49-6-104(c)(2); the law does not change eligibility or guarantee seats.
