Leave payouts after school workers die
Tennessee school districts and public charter schools may pay a deceased employee’s estate for unused, earned annual and sick leave. The employee must have died on or after September 1, 2024, while working there. Employers do not have to pay, and the law sets no payment amount. Payments follow the existing rules for deceased state employees’ estates. Employees can name a beneficiary to receive the money. Otherwise, the recipient is their retirement-benefit beneficiary under the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System. The law takes effect upon becoming law.
