Shorter apprenticeships for qualified funeral license applicants
Beginning July 1, 2025, Tennessee funeral director and embalmer license applicants need two years of apprenticeship. Training must take place in the presence of, and under the direction and supervision of, a licensed funeral director. An associate degree from a college accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education can replace one apprenticeship year. A qualifying program of study documented by the required official transcript can also replace one year. Applicants using either education option still need one year of apprenticeship.
