Family insurance payouts stay protected from creditors
Beginning July 1, 2025, Tennessee protects net life insurance and annuity payouts from all creditor claims, including seizure and garnishment. The policy or contract must benefit, or be assigned to, the insured person's spouse, children, or dependent relatives. Protection covers claims based on obligations created after January 1, 1932. It applies even when the insured person has the right to change the beneficiary. Using the protected money does not change its exempt status.
