Beginning July 1, 2025, money from a life insurance policy or annuity paid to a spouse, child, or dependent relative is protected from the insured person's creditors. The protection covers debts created after January 1, 1932, and blocks seizure, garnishment, attachment, or execution. It applies even if the insured kept the right to change the beneficiary. Using the protected money does not make it lose protection.
