Handgun permits available at age 18

Any Tennessee resident who is a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident can apply for a handgun carry permit at age 18. The Department of Safety must issue a permit if you meet all legal rules and are not barred from buying or owning a gun under state or federal law. This applies when you apply and when you renew. The law is in effect now.

Stricter DUI rules for handgun permits

To get or renew a handgun carry permit, you must have fewer than two DUI convictions in the last 10 years. You also cannot have any DUI conviction within the last 5 years. Convictions in Tennessee or any other state count. The Department of Safety enforces this rule. The law is in effect now.
