Adults can seek handgun permits at 18
The law lowers Tennessee's handgun carry permit application age from 21 to 18, effective upon becoming law. Applicants must live in Tennessee and be U.S. citizens or permanent lawful residents. They must not be barred from buying or possessing firearms under state or federal law. They must also meet the other permit requirements. The Department of Safety must issue permits to applicants who qualify. The existing permit exception in subsection (r) remains in place.
Impaired-driving convictions limit handgun carry permit access
The law sets driving-under-the-influence (DUI) conviction limits for Tennessee handgun carry permit applications and renewals. Applicants must not have two or more DUI convictions in the 10 years before applying or renewing. None of the convictions covered by that rule may fall within the preceding five years. These rules take effect upon the law becoming law.
