Germantown mayor becomes full-time with voter OK

The law makes the Germantown mayor a full-time job. The mayor must give full attention to city duties. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen sets the mayor’s pay by ordinance at a level for full-time work. Voters must approve this change in a binding referendum. If Shelby County holds a primary on the first Tuesday in May 2026, the vote is that day; otherwise it is August 6, 2026, with the county general election. Ballots print the Section 1 language, and county election officials must count and certify the results. Voter qualifications are the same as for primary or general elections. The law takes effect only after the votes are counted and certified.
