New Johnsonville limits relatives seeking city office

The law bars immediate relatives of another elected New Johnsonville city official from consideration for elected city office. Covered relatives are spouses, parents, children, siblings, stepchildren, stepparents, grandparents, grandchildren, mothers-in-law, fathers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law. The law also says being related to a state, county, city, municipal, federal, or other official alone does not trigger the ban. Current officials keep their seats and full terms. The law takes effect upon becoming law for local approval or rejection. The restrictions take effect only after approval by a two-thirds vote of the city’s legislative body. The presiding officer must announce approval or rejection and certify it to the Secretary of State.
