The law bars anyone who is an immediate relative of a current New Johnsonville elected official from being considered for any elected city office. Immediate relatives include a spouse, parent, child, sibling, stepchild, stepparent, grandparent, grandchild, mother‑in‑law, father‑in‑law, sister‑in‑law, and brother‑in‑law. It does not apply if your relative holds office in another government, like the state or county. It does not remove current officeholders or cut short their terms. The rule takes effect only after a two‑thirds vote of the city’s legislative body and certification to the Secretary of State.
