Grants for Alzheimer's family caregivers

Starting July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2029, Tennessee gives cash grants to family caregivers of someone with Alzheimer’s or related dementia. The person must live in a private home and need help with at least two daily living activities. Grants can cover home changes, needed equipment or technology, and respite care; not routine house upkeep. A caregiver can get up to $6,000 per fiscal year. Very low‑income homes get first priority, then low‑income homes; awards depend on available funds and serve all three grand divisions. Your eligibility uses “adjusted income,” which is your household income (including a spouse) minus 50% of eligible costs. It must be at or below the higher of your area or the state median for your family size. The income limit updates on July 1, 2027 and July 1, 2028 by the Social Security cost‑of‑living increase, rounded to the nearest $10. You stay eligible during a short hospital or facility stay if your family member plans to return home.

Funding and rules for caregiver grants

The state creates a Family Caregiver Grant Fund that can receive budget appropriations, gifts, and donations. The treasurer invests the money; interest stays in the fund and unused balances carry forward. This law does not itself provide money—grants are paid only if the legislature appropriates funds, with $600,000 intended in FY 2026-27. The department may make rules and must send yearly reports starting October 1, 2027 on program status and fund inflows and payments.
