Each caregiver can get up to $6,000 per fiscal year. Very low income households get first priority, then low income households. Covered costs include home safety changes, care equipment and technology, respite care, and needed medical supplies. Normal home repairs, like painting or plumbing, do not qualify.
The state runs a caregiver grant pilot from July 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027. One program serves all three grand divisions. The department gives grants to family caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s or related dementia to help pay eligible care costs.
The person you care for must need help with at least two daily tasks and live in a private home. They must have Alzheimer’s or related dementia, or a doctor’s written note of similar symptoms, and be your close relative. You must provide care and have unpaid eligible costs. For 2027, your adjusted income equals household income minus 50% of eligible care costs. You qualify if that number is at or below the larger of your area or the state median income for your family size; your spouse’s income counts. On July 1, 2027 the income limit updates for the Social Security cost-of-living raise. You stay eligible during a short hospital or skilled-care stay if your relative plans to return home.
The law creates a special fund for the grants. Money can come from the legislature and from gifts or donations. The treasurer invests the fund; interest stays in the fund and unused money rolls forward. Lawmakers state an intent to provide a one-time $200,000 in FY 2026–2027. Agencies cannot spend any grant money unless the legislature puts it in the budget.
The commissioner may set rules to run the caregiver grant program. The rules cover who can apply, how to apply, and how grants are paid. By January 15, 2028, the department must report to the legislature on program status, money received, and grants paid.
