The law requires district attorneys in areas with the Memphis Safe Task Force or a federal violent-crime task force to file reports. A report is required when the attorney enters a plea deal, lowers a charge, or dismisses or declines to prosecute a serious offense from those task forces. Serious offense includes murder, gun, drug, sexual, theft, RICO, and gang crimes. Each report is due within 10 business days of the action. A monthly compilation is also due at the end of each month when any covered action occurs. Reports go to the Tennessee attorney general and reporter, the speakers of the Senate and House, the District Attorneys General Conference, and the U.S. attorney. The rule applies only to actions on charges filed on or before June 30, 2028; after that date, reporting continues only for actions tied to charges filed by then.
