Capitol Hill protection zone with trained officers

Beginning January 1, 2027, the law creates a Capitol Hill protection zone around Tennessee’s state capitol. It covers the capitol and nearby state buildings, plus the roads and sidewalks around them. Officers the Commissioner of Safety assigns to the zone have the same police powers as local police there, including to arrest, carry a firearm, and investigate crimes. These officers must be POST-certified and complete extra training on protest laws, large public gatherings, and protecting officials. The commissioner may also assign state facility protection officers, who must complete the same extra training.
