Consecutive prison terms for crimes against minors

Beginning July 1, 2026, courts must run sentences one after another for two or more crimes with more than one minor victim. This applies even when the crimes were part of a single episode. A judge may refuse only with two findings, proven by a preponderance of the evidence. First, the facts do not warrant consecutive time. Second, consecutive time is not in the best interest of justice. The rule applies to offenses committed on or after July 1, 2026.
