State can cut funds for local violations

Starting July 1, 2026, the attorney general can investigate claims that a local government or school system broke the E‑Verify or related immigration rules. If a violation is found, the state can withhold all funds to that local government, including state‑shared taxes. The law also expands what counts as a local action to include failing to follow these rules.

Public employers must use E-Verify

Beginning July 1, 2026, all Tennessee public employers—state agencies, counties, cities, and school systems—must check every new hire in the federal E‑Verify system. They must keep the E‑Verify result for each worker for as long as that person is employed. No state or local policy can conflict with these rules.
