Sellers and banks may round cash totals to nickels

When exact change is not available, businesses and banks may round the cash part of your total to the nearest nickel. Cents ending in 01–02 round down; 03–04 round up; 06–07 round down; 08–09 round up. The last two digits of the cents decide the rounding. Rounding applies only to cash and not to electronic payments; mixed payments round only the cash portion. Non-cash amounts authorized or settled do not change. Sales tax is still calculated and remitted to the penny under Tennessee’s sales tax rounding rule. The law also allows nickel rounding if pennies stop being produced.
