New rules for Tennessee sex buyers

Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee expands its patronizing prostitution offense and sets penalties based on who is involved. The general offense and cases involving a law enforcement officer are Class A misdemeanors. Cases involving an officer age 18 or older posing as a minor, or someone with an intellectual disability, are Class B felonies. Cases involving someone under 18 are Class A felonies. Offenses within 1.5 miles of a school carry at least seven additional days of incarceration and a fine of at least $1,000. The law also updates a related criminal-law reference to include these three felony categories and allows prosecution under other applicable laws.
