Higher sentences for certain second-degree murders

Beginning July 1, 2026, people convicted under subsection (a)(1) of Tennessee’s second-degree murder law are sentenced as Range II offenders. Judges may give a Range III sentence when appropriate. No sentence may be below Range II. This rule overrides the usual sentencing rules in Title 40, Chapter 35. It applies only to crimes committed on or after July 1, 2026.
