Sickle cell tests for all Tennessee newborns

Beginning on the law’s effective date, the Tennessee Department of Health tests every newborn for sickle cell trait. If a baby tests positive, the Department notifies the parent or legal guardian as soon as practicable. This applies to babies born on or after the law’s effective date.
