Noise studies for homes near highways

The law lets a county or city ask the Tennessee Department of Transportation to study highway traffic noise for homes along the sound path of a state highway, including interstates. The local legislative body must pass a resolution. A request is allowed only when trees behind the homes were cleared for reasons not tied to building or altering the highway, and there is no wall, berm, hill, or other shielding. TDOT must approve the request, send the local government an invoice for the study’s actual cost, and will start only after it is paid. This can give nearby homeowners and renters data to push for noise fixes.
