Tennessee sheriffs must honor immigration detainers

Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee sheriff’s departments with a federal 287(g) agreement must accept immigration detainers. When they receive a detainer, they must keep the person for 48 hours after the normal release time. Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays do not count toward the 48 hours. The sheriff must tell federal immigration authorities as soon as possible before the person is released.
