Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee creates an independent State Families of Incarcerated Individuals Advisory Board. The board has nine members who are family of people who are or were incarcerated. The governor, the senate speaker, and the house speaker each appoint three, with one from each grand division. Initial terms are staggered to end Jan 1, 2028; Jan 1, 2029; and Jan 1, 2030. After that, members serve three-year terms from Jan 1 to Dec 31 and can be reappointed. Vacancies are filled the same way, and appointing officials can remove members for cause. The law also lists the new board in the state code.
Beginning July 1, 2026, the board must meet at least quarterly and take only public votes. The first three regular meetings include time for family and public comments and are held in different grand divisions. The fourth regular meeting is in Nashville with department and contractor staff to address concerns and review rules on communication, reunification, and reentry. After that meeting, the board sends recommendations to the corrections commissioner and legislative chairs. The Department of Correction and its contractors must cooperate with the board. Board members get reimbursed for reasonable travel costs under state rules.
