The Board elects an Alderman to serve as Vice Mayor. The Vice Mayor acts as Mayor when the Mayor is absent or cannot serve. If the Mayor’s office becomes vacant, the Vice Mayor serves as Mayor until the Board picks a Mayor from current Aldermen or until the next regular municipal election results are certified, whichever comes first.
You cannot run for Mayor and Alderman in the same election or hold both offices at once. If you are an Alderman and want to run for Mayor during an off year of your term, you must resign before filing to run. Washington County election officials appoint the officers, judges, and clerks under county rules. Election officers certify results to the County Election Commissioners, who canvass returns the next Monday after the election, or as soon as practical, and then declare and certify the results. All qualified town voters may vote in these elections.
The current Mayor’s term ends in 2026. Voters elect a Mayor in November 2026 for a two‑year term that ends after results are certified from the August 2028 municipal election held with the Washington County general election. Starting August 2028 and every two years, voters elect a Mayor to a two‑year term that starts the Monday after certification and runs until a successor is elected and certified. Two current Aldermen’s terms end in 2026; voters elect two Aldermen in November 2026 to four‑year terms ending at certification of the August 2030 election. Starting August 2030 and every four years, voters elect two Aldermen on that cycle. Two other Aldermen are elected in November 2028 to four‑year terms ending at certification of the August 2032 election. Starting August 2032 and every four years, voters elect two Aldermen on that cycle.
The Board appoints a recorder who also serves as Finance Director. The town administrator supervises the recorder and may remove the recorder at will. The Board sets the recorder’s salary. The recorder must be bonded or insured as set by ordinance. The recorder signs official papers with the town seal and may administer oaths.
This law applies locally only if the Jonesborough legislative body approves it by a two‑thirds vote. The presiding officer must proclaim the decision and certify it to the secretary of state. The act is effective upon becoming law only for the approval or rejection vote. For all other purposes, it takes effect only after the town gives the required two‑thirds approval.
