Lafayette mayor salary set at $75,000

Beginning the last Thursday in November after the November 2028 election, the Lafayette mayor receives $75,000 a year. The city pays it in equal monthly checks from the general fund. This does not change the current mayor’s pay before the present term ends. These changes apply only if the Lafayette legislative body approves the act by a two-thirds (2/3) vote and certifies it.

Incumbents keep current pay and terms

If you now hold a Lafayette office, this law does not change your pay until your term ends. It also does not remove you or shorten your current term. You continue under your existing salary and end date.

Per-meeting pay for council members

Each Lafayette council member gets $150 for each Council Meeting attended. They get $75 for each Committee Meeting attended. The mayor must approve payments. These payments apply only if the Lafayette legislative body adopts this act by a two-thirds (2/3) vote and certifies it.

City adds street and sanitation superintendents

Lafayette adds two named department heads: superintendent of streets and superintendent of sanitation, alongside the superintendent of gas. This recognizes those roles in city law. The change takes effect only if the Lafayette legislative body approves the act by a two-thirds (2/3) vote and certifies it.

Local approval needed for changes

This act has no effect unless the Lafayette legislative body approves it by a two-thirds (2/3) vote. The presiding officer must announce the result and certify it to the Secretary of State. The law is effective now for seeking that local approval; other parts take effect only after local approval.

Staggered Lafayette elections and term start

Three council members are elected for four-year terms in November 2026. The mayor and three council members are elected for four-year terms in November 2028. Newly elected officials take office at 10:00 a.m. on the last Thursday of November. These changes apply only if the Lafayette legislative body approves the act by a two-thirds (2/3) vote and certifies it.
