Stronger mayor role in Lexington government

The law makes the Mayor the city’s chief executive, with power to supervise staff, enforce laws, and require reports. The Mayor leads meetings of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, serves on all boards and committees, and votes only to break a tie. The Mayor may call special Board meetings with public notice and a stated agenda; the Board can act only on those items. The Mayor submits the annual budget, appoints members to boards and commissions when allowed by law, and signs Board-approved contracts. The office is full-time, and the Board may add duties that do not conflict with the charter.

Mayor can suspend city employees

If you work for the City of Lexington, the Mayor can suspend you for misconduct or not doing your duties. You can appeal the suspension to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen. The Board’s decision is final.
