Paramedics can pronounce death outside hospitals

Beginning January 1, 2027, trained Tennessee-licensed paramedics can determine and pronounce death outside hospitals. Before doing so, they must complete a death‑determination course and attempt resuscitation under Emergency Medical Services Board standards. They must keep proof of course completion and show it to the Board if asked. A licensed physician can tell a paramedic to stop resuscitation. Paramedics cannot pronounce death for someone who dies in a hospital. The Board can discipline paramedics who do not follow these rules. The EMS Board can start writing rules now; the rest starts January 1, 2027.
