New members and terms for Tennessee’s Arts Commission
Beginning July 1, 2026, the law removes the existing Tennessee Arts Commission members and replaces them with 15 appointees. The governor appoints one member from each of Tennessee’s nine congressional districts. The Senate and House speakers each appoint one member from western, middle, and eastern Tennessee. Members must be Tennessee citizens with a demonstrated strong interest in the arts. The commission must broadly represent performing, visual, and literary arts. Governor appointees must live in the district where they are registered to vote. Initial terms end June 30, 2029, for district 1–3 and western members; June 30, 2030, for district 4–6 and middle members; and June 30, 2031, for district 7–9 and eastern members. Later terms last five years, running July 1 through June 30, with appointments made by June 15. Vacancies are filled for the remaining term, and members stay until successors are appointed. Members completing a full five-year term cannot be reappointed for one year after that term ends. These changes do not create direct household payments or benefits.
