The law approves bus rapid transit (BRT) with dedicated lanes on Nolensville Pike, Gallatin Pike, and in Downtown Nashville. Any use of a state highway or right-of-way needs approval by the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) and Metro Nashville. Before approval, TDOT must give written notice to the legislative speakers and key finance and transportation chairs. TDOT will not approve a BRT lane that harms future highway improvements or the safety of highway users. Local voters on November 5, 2024 approved funding for these corridors to improve transit service, pedestrian safety, signals, and traffic flow.
