Life insurance limits protect Texans with disabilities

The law limits caregivers' insurable interest—the legal stake needed for life insurance—in the lives of people with disabilities. Covered caregivers must be relatives within the third degree by blood or marriage, as defined by Texas law. Covered settings are Texas state-supported living centers, licensed assisted living facilities, licensed intermediate care facilities, and group homes. The restriction covers life insurance policies under Chapter 1101 of the Texas Insurance Code. It applies to policies delivered, issued for delivery, or renewed on or after January 1, 2026.
