Texas Medicaid adds covered lactation help

Beginning September 1, 2025, Texas Medicaid must pay lactation consultants for breastfeeding help provided to Medicaid recipients. Consultants must hold certification from a national or international program approved by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. The executive commissioner must create a separate provider type so these consultants can enroll in Medicaid and receive payment. If federal approval is needed, the affected state agency must request it. The agency may delay the affected provision until approval is granted.
