Beginning September 1, 2025, more retired Texas county court judges qualify as retired judicial officers under handgun carry licensing law. They must have served at least 48 months in a constitutional county court or statutory county court. The definition also covers visiting judges, senior judges, certain designated judicial officers, and retired federal judges living in Texas. Applicants must still meet other licensing requirements; the law does not automatically grant a license. The change applies only to applications submitted on or after September 1, 2025. Earlier applications remain governed by the prior law.
