Texas workers get retirement credit purchase options

Beginning September 1, 2025, Texas Employees Retirement System members can buy credit for each month worked during a 90-day membership wait. This covers waiting periods after starting employment or holding office, even when no retirement contributions were made. Buying these credits for months before your latest hiring date changes the hiring date used under the system’s retirement laws. The system must use the first day of the earliest month purchased under this law. It must also set the required payment to avoid a loss based on projected retirement costs; no payment amount is specified.
