The Texas State Fire Marshal can commission fire and arson investigators, oversee their legally assigned law enforcement work, and revoke commissions for just cause. Beginning September 1, 2025, covered officers must receive Schedule C pay, with salaries set by the state budget law. The investigator classification directive covers the two-year budget period starting that date and expires September 1, 2027—not the ongoing pay requirement. Beginning September 1, 2025, commissioned State Fire Marshal officers also gain eligibility for hazardous-duty benefits. Injury-related leave coverage extends to these officers only for injuries occurring on or after September 1, 2025.
