Permanent frac tank plates carry $5 fee

Beginning September 1, 2025, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles can issue permanent frac tank plates for $5 each. The fees go to the department's fund. Qualifying tanks are portable or stationary high-volume vessels built to separate, store, or temporarily hold materials from oil and gas fracturing. The plates do not expire or need an annual registration sticker. The plate number can stay while the plate is renewed, until the tank is sold or removed from service. Tanks displaying these plates do not need the registration receipt otherwise required by law.
