New election rules for Brazoria drainage commissioners

Brazoria Drainage District No. 4 has a three-member board, with Places 1, 2, and 3. Elections move from November to the uniform May election date in odd-numbered years. Commissioners serve staggered four-year terms starting June 1 after election and remain until their successors are elected and qualify. The first elections under this schedule are May 2027 for Place 3 and May 2029 for Places 1 and 2. Current terms end May 31 of those respective years, or later if the newly elected commissioners have not yet qualified. A commissioner automatically resigns upon announcing or becoming a candidate for another Texas or federal office of profit or trust. This covers general, special, and primary elections when more than one year and 30 days remain in the commissioner's term. Running for district commissioner is exempt. Vacancies in commissioner seats or other board positions follow Texas Water Code Section 49.105, replacing prior district-specific rules. The act takes effect September 1, 2025, unless two-thirds of all elected members of each legislative house approved immediate effect.
