For tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2026, Texas requires a burial-property tax exemption without an application. This applies only when no one applies and the property’s owner cannot be identified. The chief appraiser must know, or should know from a reasonable inspection, that the property qualifies for the exemption. The appraiser can ask government agencies, local governments, county historical commissions, or nonprofits for help checking whether the property qualifies.
