Texas patients get CAR-T therapy protections

Texas health plans covered by this law must cover medically necessary chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy when they already cover it. The provider must be a certified facility meeting the therapy’s FDA-approved product license requirements. It must also participate in the plan’s network for other services. Covered plans include private insurance, HMOs, small-employer plans, specified public-employee plans, and self-funded plans sponsored by professional employer organizations. Medicaid, including Medicaid managed care, and the Child Health Plan Program (CHIP) are excluded. The requirement applies to plans delivered, issued for delivery, or renewed on or after January 1, 2026. The law’s effective date is September 1, 2025, and the insurance commissioner can adopt rules to carry it out.
