For initial unemployment claims filed beginning January 1, 2026, Texas changes how it identifies a worker’s last employer. The Texas Workforce Commission uses employer definitions in Texas law or another state’s unemployment law. This replaces the prior rule based on working at least 30 hours in a week. Other state or federal law can override this rule. Claims filed before that date remain under the law in effect when filed. The law does not specify changes to benefit amounts or who qualifies.
