Fewer degree requirements for Texas state jobs

Beginning September 1, 2025, Texas requires its classification officer to review state jobs for lower education, experience, and training requirements. The review must identify changes that expand the applicant pool while ensuring applicants can do the work well. The officer must reduce bachelor's-degree requirements where practical and study ways for employees without bachelor's degrees to advance. The officer must report to the Governor's Budget Office and Legislative Budget Board within the timeframe in Government Code Section 654.037(a)(2). These steps do not guarantee a job or promotion.
