Beginning September 1, 2025, Texas bans high-level radioactive waste disposal and most storage, including by compact waste disposal license holders. Storage is allowed only at nuclear power reactors or university-run research and test reactors where the waste originated. This exception does not allow disposal. Outside those reactor sites, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality cannot grant certain construction, stormwater, or operating approvals. That permit restriction covers waste facilities licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission under 10 C.F.R. Part 72.
